Poetry in Looms

The weavers of Odisha are celebrated for their magical creations both in

cotton and silk

Odisha boasts a rich tradition of weaving, notably the renowned ikat weave. This technique involves selectively dyeing threads before weaving by binding fibres, creating exquisite patterns. The art of Odisha ikat has deep historical roots, stemming from ancient trade with Indonesia, the birthplace of ikat. Fascinatingly, many Odia ikat weavers are Buddhists with a strong devotion to the Jagannath cult. Legend tells of a gift of a saree to the Chinese scholar-monk Huen T’Sang in the 7th Century CE. Odisha Potli, associated with Odisha Journeys, collaborates closely with these skilled weavers, offering immersive experiences to guests. They witness the intricate handloom-making process, learn the stories behind each creation, and partake in community meals. The Poetry in Loom journey, a day trip from Bhubaneswar, is part of a comprehensive 7 to 8-day tour.
